Tamino has been instructed by the Queen of the Night to free her daughter Pamina who has been kidnapped by Sarastro, said to be an evil wizard. Having fallen in love with a picture of the maiden, Tamino sets off to complete his task. It turns out the Sarastro is rather more wise than evil, and he even foretells that Pamino and Tamino are destined to be together. However, before the hero can be accepted into the Temple of Wisdom and the couple can learn the meaning of true bliss, a number of trials must be overcome. These are faced by Tamino and his companion Papageno. The latter is to be granted his bride Papagena, although the highest honour – accession to the fellowship of the Temple – is reserved for Pamina and Tamino.
