State Operetta Dresden – from classical operetta to rock‘n‘roll
The State Operetta Dresden’s ensemble offers a wide repertory of classical operetta, opera-bouffe and musicals as well as concerts.
You can sway away in waltz and Csárdás-melodies or entertain yourself in dreamy productions of fairy tales like “The wizard of Oz” or Mozart’s “The magic flute”, both very suitable for the whole family. From May 2, 2014 onwards our next opera comique production “Die verkaufte Braut” by Smetana will further add to the State Operetta
Dresden’s reputation. The manifold facettes of our repertory can also be enjoyed in musical highlights such as “My Fair Lady”, “Cabaret”, “Kiss me, Kate” or “Little Shop of Horrors” (premiere January 17, 2014) or “Evita” (premiere June 27, 2014). Only recently the State Operetta Dresden proved that it is also able to rock and roll: Richard O’Brien’s “The Rocky Horror Show” is inspiring a huge crowd and not only hard core “Rocky” fans. Once each year in March the State Operetta Dresden has its unique ball in Dresden’s top hotel Taschenberg Kempinski (March 14 in 2014). In these glittering nights our guests are entertained with the best that operetta
and musical can offer and can enjoy live dance music until the break of dawn accompanied by culinary specialities of the grand hotels cuisine. In addition the theater is well recognized for its unique practice of Johann Strauss rarities. Apart from Strauss’ classics like “The Bat”and “A night in Venice” you can only see in Dresden works like “Prince Methusalem”, “The Carnival in Rome” or “The Queen’s lace handkerchief”. These and other specialiaties are bundled in the annual Johann Strauss
Festival Dresden in early May (May 2 to May 11, 2014). Especially the rarities are well presented by popular comedians like Désirée Nick or Alfons, who will be presenting Jacques Offenbach’s “The Grand Duchess of Gerolstein”, reflecting the ever young and problematic relationship of French and Germans in his own special humorous style. A more than extraordinary discovery will be stage as of October 2013 with the first German version of Kurt Weill’s „The Firebrand of Florence“. For the same time this will be the first fully scenic production of Weill’s Broadwayoperetta outside the US. This rediscovered treasure of Weill’s American period is all about ambiguous confusion in the affairs of love. The plot offers a lot of Italian flair designed by the congenial librettist Ira Gershwin, brother of the celebrated composer George Gershwin.
